What is a starter strip shingle?
GAF starter strips help protect against blow-offs at the eaves and rakes, can unlock stronger wind warranty coverage for qualifying shingles¹ and eliminate the need to manually cut up 3-tab shingles to make starter strips.

WeatherBlocker™ Premium Starter Strips Installation — step-by-step

Step 1
Separate the strips into half pieces at the perforated line. -
Step 2
Place at the eaves and rakes, leaving a .25” to .75” overhang, sealant facing up, at the edge. -
Step 3
Nail about 1.5” - 3” above the starter strip’s edge and put 4 nails into the strip at about 1.5”, 13.5”, 25.5” and 37.5” across the strip. -
Step 4
Install half pieces vertically up the rake. Overlap the eave edge starter strip at least 3” with the sealant nearest the edge. -
Half Strip
For shingles with an exposure less than 6” use a half 8.5” strip by tearing on the perforation line. -
Full Strip
For shingles with an exposure of 6” or greater use a full 17” strip. Do not separate the strips.

Starter strip shingles help reduce the risk of shingle blow-offs at the eaves and rakes that can lead to damaging leaks. Some manufacturers offer stronger wind warranty coverage for qualifying shingles when starter strips and special installation methods are used.
Our proprietary Dura Grip™ adhesive creates a strong bond between shingle layers. This long, black strip of tacky adhesive activates after installation when sunlight heats the shingles.
WeatherBlocker™ Premium Starter Strip Shingles have factory applied, properly positioned Dura Grip™ Adhesive which helps lock down shingle edges at the eaves and rakes to reduce the risk of shingle blow-offs.
WeatherBlocker™ provides either 50 linear feet or 100 linear ft of coverage per bundle. 100 linear feet is the maximum coverage when splitting the perforated full sheets into half. 50 linear feet applies when you use the full sheets without splitting them.
Yes, GAF WeatherBlocker™ Premium Starter Strip Shingles are compatible with all GAF residential asphalt shingles.
As per our installation instructions, nail approximately 1 1/2" - 3" (38-76 mm) above the edge of the starter strip.
Both WeatherBlocker™ and Pro-Start® starter strip shingles provide an efficient alternative to field-cutting strip shingles for installation along eaves and rakes. Their Dura Grip™ adhesive helps lock down shingles edges at eaves and rakes to reduce the risk of blow-offs. While Pro-Start® may be a more affordable option, WeatherBlocker™ Premium Starter Strip Shingles are extra-wide for compatibility with all GAF asphalt shingles.
