Whether you're getting ready to build a new home or looking to replace the roof on your current one, GAF has numerous residential roofing options from which to choose. One of them, the GAF TimberSteel™ Metal Roofing System, is an intriguing choice you might not have considered.

You may already be familiar with the benefits and modern aesthetic of a metal roof but didn't think metal was an appropriate choice for a residence. Or perhaps, you thought the cost would be out of reach. GAF has addressed these concerns with TimberSteel™, a premium-quality metal roof designed for strength, durability, and residential curb appeal.

How Is TimberSteel™ Different?

Unlike the typical vertical standing seam metal roof you've seen on many commercial and industrial buildings, a GAF TimberSteel™ roof is designed with a more residential aesthetic in mind. When it comes to durability, affordability, speed of installation, and industry-leading warranty protection, you may find that a TimberSteel™ metal roofing system makes perfect sense for your home.

What Are the Benefits?

There are many advantages to a GAF TimberSteel™ Metal Roofing System. Let's explore a few:

Aesthetics

The TimberSteel™ roof complements a wide variety of residential home styles, from traditional to transitional and modern. TimberSteel™ is available in a range of distinctive colors, from the strong, classic look of Obsidian Black, Charcoal Gray, Platinum Gray, Dark Bronze, and Terra Bronze to dramatic specialty colors, like Rustic Red, Evergreen, and Mariner Blue.

Performance

The GAF TimberSteel™ Metal Roofing System is fabricated from Galvalume®, which combines the high-performance qualities of steel, aluminum, and zinc to give your roof both strength and corrosion resistance. In addition, the protective coating applied to a TimberSteel™ roof further enhances its resistance to rust and corrosion, keeping it looking great for years to come.

TimberSteel™ is well-suited for homes in a High or Severe Impact Hail Zone or areas that are susceptible to flying debris during storms. Its UL 2218 Class 4 Impact-Resistant rating (the highest possible rating) means it's been tested to withstand a two-inch steel ball being dropped twice from a height of 20 feet without sustaining damage.

TimberSteel™ has earned the ASTM D3161 Class F Wind Resistance rating and has met the requirements of the TAS-100 Wind-Driven Rain Resistance test. It is also Florida Building Code Approved.

A TimberSteel™ metal roofing system also has sustainability benefits. As Megan Sundberg, Product Manager for GAF, explains: "Metal shingles are reflective and can help lower heating and cooling costs. TimberSteel™-branded metal components are made from recycled material and are recyclable at the end of their useful life."

Affordability and Installation Ease

With its unique interlocking, nail-gunnable design, the GAF TimberSteel™ metal roofing system is designed for easy installation by an asphalt shingle roofing crew, whereas the installation of a typical standing seam metal roof is labor-intensive. In most cases, a TimberSteel™ metal roof can be installed in about half the time as a standing seam metal roof.

TimberSteel™ is designed to be installed on a typical residential roof deck—plywood, OSB, or wood plank—and with just about any roof slope, starting with a minimum slope of 3:12.

Sundberg notes, "In some cases, the material and labor cost of the TimberSteel™ system is lower than other systems, meaning it can be a more affordable option for homeowners who are typically priced out of metal."

Warranty

The TimberSteel™ metal roofing system is backed by unparalleled warranty coverage when installed by a GAF Metal Certified contractor and purchased with a TimberSteel™ ArmorPledge™ Limited Warranty. With ArmorPledge™, the warranty for manufacturing defects is extended to 50 years from the typical non-pro-rated coverage period of 15 years and includes the cost of roofing tear-off and disposal.

The exceptional enhanced coverage offered by GAF includes No Maximum Wind Speed Coverage, which protects TimberSteel™ metal roofing system components (like field shingles, hip and ridge cap shingles, eave drip edge flashing, rake edge flashing, and ridge vents) for 15 years with no limitation on maximum wind speed.

Another GAF enhanced coverage option is 30 Years Workmanship Coverage for errors made during the installation of your TimberSteel™ roof. This differentiates GAF from other manufacturers, who offer warranties that cover labor to repair or replace roofing components due to manufacturing defects but not due to installation errors. Covering installation workmanship for 30 years demonstrates the high level of confidence that GAF places in its Metal Certified contractors.

Says Sundberg: "We provide onsite CARE training from our dedicated TimberSteel™ CARE trainers for a GAF Metal Certified contractor's first two jobs, where our trainers walk the crew through the entire system and spend time on the roof during install to ensure the system is installed properly. Installation training is extremely important, as the enhanced warranty coverage for the TimberSteel™ system is industry leading."
