Supporting Latino Roofing Professionals at the 2nd Annual Latinos in Roofing Expo

Spirits were high at the second annual GAF Latinos in Roofing Expo, where more than 600 Latino roofing professionals gathered in Houston, Texas, for networking, business growth, and education seminars—all in Spanish. "To have a conference dedicated to Latinos, I love it," says Jorge Parada. "I'm sitting next to somebody that looks like me, that speaks the same language. It's a different experience from other conferences."

Empowering Attendees at the Latinos in Roofing Expo

The Latinos in Roofing Expo is one way GAF is working to level the playing field for Latino roofing professionals. Rather than take a one-size-fits-all approach, the expo provides education and resources that consider the Latino community's unique challenges. For example, industry experts taught classes in Spanish such as The Power of Latinos in Your Company's Culture, In-home Selling, Single Ply TPO, Coatings, and The Power of Content Creation for Roofing Companies.

In addition to networking with other top-tier contractors, attendees received education in Spanish about the newest GAF contractor products, programs, and trainings designed to help roofers run—and grow—their companies. According to several attendees, these "culturally intended" business growth sessions, offered in Spanish, were one of the most valuable aspects of the conference.

Many other conferences and training opportunities expect Latino roofing professionals to thrive with resources that cater to the non-Hispanic, English-speaking contractor community. In contrast, the Latinos in Roofing Expo empowered attendees through culturally intended offerings and shared language.

"The majority of these [Hispanic] contractors speak English, but it's also cultural. So, the way we do business has to feel culturally intended. Do business like Hispanics do business. Speak the language Hispanics speak," says Alan Lopez, GAF CARE training operations manager. Lopez has been a leading advocate for Latino roofing contractors at GAF and in the roofing industry as a whole.

Improving Latino Roofers' Access to Resources

Many Latino roofers have experienced disadvantages when rising in the roofing ranks because of language and/or cultural differences. For too long, the industry has pigeonholed Latinos into labor roles. As a result, Latinos are drastically underrepresented in roofing leadership, despite making up 57.7% of the roofing industry. Improving access to resources and cultural interactions is a sign of the roofing industry evolving.

"GAF is the front-runner in helping Latinos, because they have given us so many free resources and free seminars in Spanish," says conference attendee Junior Garcia, CEO. "They have allowed us to get to know what other [non-Hispanic] contractors already know." Some of the GAF culturally intended resources include:

  • Spanish-language GAF website with the same user-friendly features as the English-language GAF website.
  • Spanish-language GAF Document Library for Residential and Commercial GAF roofing products, including technical bulletins, warranty guarantees, data sheets, and more.
  • Spanish-language GAF CARE trainings and resources, including business development courses, hands-on-trainings, and more—all taught with the needs of Latino contractors in mind.
  • Spanish-language events, such as the 2023 GAF Latinos in Roofing Expo, designed to develop Hispanics in roofing leadership.

Connecting with Latino Consumers

Developing Latino contractors also creates a powerful financial opportunity to serve Latino consumers. This benefits Hispanics in roofing and the roofing industry as a whole.

Too often, Latino consumers are overlooked and underestimated. In fact, the Latino consumer base currently has unmet needs of more than $100 billion. Empowering Latino roofers to develop and grow as business leaders is one way to help bring change. "If you want to do business with the Latino community, you have to speak their language," says Hugo Saldaña, GAF territory manager in Houston, Texas.

Speaking as a Latino professional in the roofing industry, Saldaña explains that people are at the heart of increasing a consumer base and growing contractor opportunities. "My parents preferred to do business with people who also spoke Spanish, their native language," says Saldaña. "Every day, when I go into work with these guys, it's like helping my dad or my mom. I think when you do that, and these guys know there's a caring relationship there, it goes a long way."

Moving Towards the Future

While the Latinos in Roofing Expo is a huge win, GAF and the roofing industry still have opportunities to grow. For example, GAF recognizes that female Latina roofing professionals may experience more challenges than their male counterparts. "There are a lot of challenges we [women roofing professionals] face, but there are opportunities for leadership. Now there are more resources and training and more opportunities to build our skills and build our knowledge, and be able to have the same opportunities as men," says Valeria Avila of Servi Express Roofing. GAF provides opportunities to empower women in roofing and recognizes the benefit of forming better bridges between women and the roofing industry.

Resources for Growth

Although there is work to be done, the 2023 GAF Latinos in Roofing Expo is another step forward for the roofing industry. "Our company has done an amazing job—we now have a Spanish website and cater a lot to the Hispanic community, but there's still greater need," said Andres Beltran, a GAF CARE training manager based in Greenville, South Carolina.

As the industry continues to evolve, Beltran encourages Latino roofers to connect with the free, Spanish-language training services and business development opportunities at GAF CARE Contractor Training Centers. "Whether it be from a marketing standpoint, financing, business development, leadership, insurance, and restoration—we can help Latino contractors to elevate their game," says Beltran.

Making Connections at the 2024 GAF Latinos In Roofing Summit

For the past several years, GAF has hosted the Latinos In Roofing Summit & Expo to acknowledge, celebrate, and empower Latino roofing contractors and installers. The event provides networking opportunities, education, and training—presented entirely in Spanish—in a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere.Now in its third year, the summit has become a trusted resource for the Spanish-speaking contractor community to gain insights into how to better run and grow their roofing businesses. Educational sessions cover topics essential for business success, such as sales, insurance restoration work, commercial roofing, leadership, marketing, and roofing products.The first Latinos In Roofing Expo of 2024 was held on June 22nd in Los Angeles, and hundreds of industry professionals attended. With an emphasis on fostering community, the event featured a range of activities, including a pre-reception networking session and the chance to attend an LA Dodgers game with their new connections.Here's a look at what the event offered attendees and the experiences they shared.Breaking through Language BarriersAlan Lopez, GAF CARE trainer, explains that Latinos In Roofing events were developed when he noticed more Hispanic contractors attending GAF events conducted in English. For many of them, English was a second language, so it was harder to learn and take in all the information, some of which was lost in translation. Lopez reached out to his leadership at GAF, and they were eager to offer resources for Latino contractors, hosting the first expo in 2019.Abad Sarate, CEO of Asa Pro Roofing in Seattle, Washington, credits the conference being conducted entirely in Spanish as critical to successfully learning and understanding the information presented. "For us, it is very important to understand it in our main language, it is essential," he says. "And to have this type of conference for many Latino contractors fills us with pride." He continues, "I see more and more Latinos owning roofing companies, and the truth is that I am very happy—it makes me very proud as a Latino too."Luis Velasquez from Entrenando Latinos In Roofing agrees that the summit presented in Spanish was important to attendees' success. "We Latinos, who are first generation, who did not go through school, who come from poor countries, have a conflict and that is that we do not understand 100% English, we are not fully bilingual," he said. "So, when we manage to understand what is going on and how we can put it into practice, it is a complete gain. When we put knowledge in our head, the head will put money in our pockets."Creating an Annual Tradition for Roofing ProfessionalsGaining knowledge for business success was a key theme at this year's event. The informational sessions, keynote lectures, and demonstrations enabled attendees to learn about new products and gain new skills while connecting with other Latinos in the roofing industry. Many attendees were repeat visitors, demonstrating the value the event provides.Sarate is a two-time attendee and explains that the annual gathering has been instrumental in his company's development. "It has been an exceptional part of our growth because of all the knowledge that we take away from here," he shares. "We come back with much more knowledge. And in the end, knowledge is power... We put that knowledge back into the company, and it has benefited us a lot."Marcos Sierra from Sierra Group Roofing & Solar returned to the expo for a third time because of the networking opportunities and education. "The reason I come back is, one, to see my colleagues from other parts of the United States. Two, every time I come, I learn something new. And three, to refine, refine, refine. [So we can] grow our business," he said.Supporting Contractors beyond the Roofing Summit & ExpoThe Latinos In Roofing initiative started at GAF to create resources and a community for Spanish-speaking contractors and installers. Since establishing the initiative in 2017, the company has seen more and more members of the Hispanic community thrive.Contractors who attend the Latinos In Roofing Summit & Expo are granted access to GAF business tools, which they can use to raise their profit margins and reduce risks. They can also work toward becoming certified with GAF and joining the elite certified contractor program. They can then offer GAF warranties that help with their value propositions when working with potential clients.From increasing profits to growing their client lists and achieving financial independence, the contractors are finding success through the support they receive. Sarate can attest to how attending these Expos has helped his business. How GAF Contributed to Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief Efforts

Several years after Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico in 2017 and caused around $90 billion in damage, residents were still working to repair their homes and rebuild their communities. Subsequent storms further damaged unfixed properties and the power grid continued to suffer frequent blackouts. As a result, many families were living in unsafe conditions.In response, GAF, through our Community Matters initiative partnered with Team Rubicon and local nongovernmental organizations to provide Puerto Rico hurricane relief. GAF donated roofing materials, roof installation trainings, and hundreds of hours of volunteer labor toward the Puerto Rico hurricane relief effort. Since 2017, GAF has continued its commitment and has donated materials for over 500 roofs and helped install them all over Puerto Rico.Video TranscriptEnglish Translation: The storm came and took my home. [00:00:07]A lot of the homeowners either are financially short or just don't have the capabilities to do it themselves. We're able to provide the work and the labor for them and just help them out however we can.[00:00:21]It's really important to us that we are always putting the highest quality materials into these homes.Yesterday, we were at el Barrio Consejo en Guayanilla, and we were teaching ProTechos, Team Rubicon, and members of the local community how to apply GAF roof coatings. After we finished our coatings portion, we actually did a Liberty rolled roofing. We predominantly do commercial, but all throughout the years, we've done residential. That's why we're here today at this event. We're trying to get updated on the new stuff that's coming out, specifically from GAF. Innovative ideas, new products, new software, new tech. So follow me along today as we explore the GAF summit.[00:00:45]Today, we're going into the principles of ventilation. Designs change, architecture changes, and you need new ways of ventilating. And I don't know all of them. So I want to get some info and see what GAF has to offer as far as new products and new thoughts on how to move the air around. So we just got out of our first breakout session about ventilation. A lot of math, a lot of numbers going into the calculations of moving air around in your attic space to have a really good performed roof system. I didn't know all those details. Now I know, got to use it going forward from there.[00:01:19]I just got out of the AI CRM breakout session there. A little bit of an information overload, and that was a good thing because it really showed me how much I was missing the CRM and AI, it's the future. It's coming.[00:01:37]So I just got out of the third and final breakout of today's GAF Summit, and it was about sales, and it was very interesting to see the different dynamics that take place in the residential market when you're dealing with a homeowner versus something commercial, where oftentimes you don't even get to see who you're selling to. So to find out those little intricacies inside that process was super insightful. The best part of today was everything.
